    PMI Launches IQOS ILUMA i in Egypt

    Philip Morris Misr launched the IQOS ILUMA i in Egypt, the “latest and most advanced smoke-free device in its portfolio,” according to the company. The device features the Smartcore Induction System, which heats tobacco without combustion, delivering a cleaner, residue-free experience. It includes smart features like a touchscreen, pause mode, FlexPuff, and improved battery technology.

    “We leverage science, world-leading brands, and commercial capabilities to provide better alternatives to our consumers,” said Ali Nevzat Karaman, managing director of Philip Morris Egypt and Levant. “Following the introduction of IQOS ILUMA in Egypt in 2023, we are now taking the IQOS experience to new heights. IQOS ILUMA i is our most innovative device to date—our flagship product in the portfolio of scientifically substantiated, heat-not-burn smoke-free systems.”

    The IQOS ILUMA i is compatible with existing TEREA sticks, avoiding the need for format changes. This launch supports Philip Morris International’s vision of a smoke-free future, backed by over $14 billion in R&D and a goal to eliminate cigarettes. Smoke-free products now make up 42% of PMI’s net revenues, with 38.6 million adult users worldwide as of December 2024.

    PMFTC Eyes Double-Digit Growth for IQOS in the Philippines

    PMFTC Inc., the Philippine affiliate of Philip Morris International (PMI), is targeting double-digit growth this year for its smoke-free product, IQOS, as it pushes to expand its market in the country.

    In an interview, PMFTC President Gijs de Best said the Philippines now has around 150,000 IQOS users since the product’s launch in 2020. “People don’t understand what the problem is related to smoking because in the Philippines, 60% of people believe that nicotine is the most harmful ingredient, which it is not,” he said. “It’s the burning that is causing the issue. Simply, when you use a cigarette, once it is lit, harmful chemicals are released. What our technology is all about is heating, not burning.”

    Because it was launched in the market during the COVID-19 pandemic, IQOS gained traction mainly through word of mouth. Now, PMFTC aims to accelerate growth by increasing education around the benefits of heated tobacco. To support its expansion, PMI inaugurated a ₱8.8-billion ($150 million) manufacturing plant in Tanauan, Batangas last year to produce IQOS and other smoke-free products locally. The Philippines is one of 96 global markets for IQOS, with Indonesia currently being the largest in the region.

    Major U.K. Supermarkets Told to Stop Tobacco Ads

    The British government has contacted Sainsbury’s and Morrisons, two of the UK’s largest supermarket chains, asking them to stop “advertising and promoting” heated tobacco products, which it says is against the law, according to the BBC. It was reported in February that both supermarkets were displaying posters and video screens showing devices that create a “nicotine-containing vapor by heating tobacco with an electric current.” At the time, both supermarkets said they believed the adverts were legal.

    Since 2002, the law has defined a tobacco product as something designed to be “smoked, sniffed, sucked or chewed.” Those supporting heated products point out that such products do not produce smoke, and Philip Morris International says it believes the Department of Health’s interpretation of the law is wrong, and says it has “complied with all applicable laws and regulations” since it launched its heated product, iQos, in 2016.

    The government has now written to the supermarkets saying that, in its opinion, the law does apply to heated products.

    A spokesperson for Morrisons said it was reviewing the letter and would respond “in due course.” Sainsbury’s said, “We remain in close contact with the government and industry partners and are planning our transition to ensure we also comply with planned incoming legislation.”

    It would likely take a court case to settle this dispute; however, currently, there is a bill at the committee stage in the House of Lords that is expected to conclusively ban all tobacco and vape advertising and sponsorship, making other legal actions futile.

    PM Korea Introduces New “Cigarette-Type” E-Cig

    Philip Morris Korea officially launched its new cigarette-style vaping device “IQOS ILUMA i ONE” on today (June 12), which improves cost-effectiveness for the company. The new product is an entry model for the Illuma i series following the ‘Iqos Illuma i Prime’ and ‘Iluma i’, which were introduced in February. The recommended consumer price is 59,000 won ($43.66).

    The iQOS Illuma i One features a compact all-in-one design and intuitive usability. The “Auto Start” function, which automatically starts heating when a dedicated “Tabaco” stick is inserted, and the “Flex Puff” function, which automatically operates so that additional inhalation can be performed up to four times for up to six minutes by analyzing individual usage patterns.

    It can be used up to 20 times continuously when fully charged, and it weighs 74 grams.

    Today (June 3), Philip Morris International presented at the 2025 dbAccess Global Consumer Conference, showcasing its strategic focus on smoke-free products amid a backdrop of both opportunities and challenges. The company reported strong growth in its smoke-free portfolio, while also managing a resilient combustible business through strategic price adjustments and cost management.

    PMI reported organic revenue growth between 6% and 8% and organic operating income growth of 10.5% to 12.5%. The company said it remains on course to have two-thirds of its revenue come from smoke-free products by 2030.

    PMI said its smoke-free product volume increased by more than 14%, and revenue from smoke-free products grew by over 20% organically. This category was led by its Zyn nicotine pouches, which saw over 50% growth in the U.S. during Q1 2025, and has plans for further expansion in Europe and other markets.

    IQOS experienced nearly 10% growth in Japan and over 7% in Europe despite regulatory challenges, with Veev holding the top position in five EU markets, focusing on profitable growth.

    Emmanuel Babeau, CFO of PMI, said the company plans to expand IQOS in the U.S. and enter new markets such as Turkey, Brazil, and India, and expects to reach a net debt to EBITDA ratio of 2x by the end of 2026.

    Philip Morris International Inc. held its 2025 Annual Meeting of Shareholders today (May 7), with board chairman André Calantzopoulos and CEO Jacek Olczak answering questions and presenting the company’s performance.

    “Our smoke-free transformation continues to advance rapidly,” Olczak said. “We marked the 10-year anniversaries for both IQOS and ZYN in 2024 while achieving several key milestones, including our smoke-free business reaching almost $15 billion in net revenues.

    “We are increasingly deploying a multicategory strategy with our leading brands IQOS, ZYN, and VEEV, supporting our position as the global smoke-free champion as we continue to deliver meaningful value for our shareholders.”

    Shareholders elected 11 nominees for director; approved, on an advisory basis, the compensation of named executive officers; and ratified the selection of PricewaterhouseCoopers SA as independent auditors. Final voting results will be included in a Form 8-K that PMI will file with the SEC in the coming days.

    IQOS System Commercially Available in Texas

    Today, PMI U.S. announced its FDA-authorized IQOS system is now commercially available to residents in the Greater Austin, Texas, area online at www.IQOS.com/us, at select pop-up stores, and other 21+ venues. IQOS is available in more than 70 markets globally since launching in Japan 10 years ago. The launch in Texas marks the first in a series of introductions in markets across the U.S.

    “We’ve seen the impact that a diverse range of smoke-free alternatives—like IQOS and ZYN—can have in helping adults 21+ move away from cigarettes,” said Stacey Kennedy, PMI U.S. CEO. ”We are committed to raising awareness and educating both consumers and public health leaders about the progress being made in harm reduction with our smoke-free products.”

    The news that Austinite’s can now purchase IQOS onlinefollows the March announcement that a permanent IQOS store opened downtown. Since October 2024, more than 5,000 Austin residents signed up to “Be the First” to experience IQOS.

    PMI Launches IQOS in Texas

    Philip Morris International began selling its IQOS heated tobacco device in Austin, Texas, today (March 27), an executive told Reuters, kicking off efforts to build a market for the world’s top-selling heated tobacco device in the United States.

    PMI said that after a successful pilot program, it was offering IQOS to smoking-age Austin residents and would host demonstrations and guided trials for adults to showcase the product. The device is being offered for $60 with the accompanying tobacco sticks available for $8, said Francisca Rahardja, vice president and chief marketing officer of inhalables at PMI U.S.

    Rahardja said PMI was offering IQOS at a lower price versus some other markets in part to reflect the fact it was trying to build up appetite among new consumers. PMI hopes to capture a 10% share of U.S. tobacco and heated tobacco unit volume by 2030 and build a substantial base of new users in the world’s top market for smoking alternatives.

    PMI previously said it would launch IQOS in four cities in two U.S. states, but so far only the Austin launch has been announced. It is pursuing a limited U.S. roll-out of an older version of the IQOS device while waiting for authorization from the FDA to sell the latest iteration, dubbed ILUMA, in the country.

    Philip Morris International (PMI) has enjoyed success in Egypt with its IQOS heated tobacco product and is looking to expand to other smoke-free products in the market, said Tommaso Di Giovanni, vice president for International Communication and Engagement at PMI. With an estimated 15 million adult smokers in the country, IQOS has already made significant progress in providing a reduced-risk alternative to traditional cigarettes.

     “We were—and we are—selling a product that causes diseases and is addictive: cigarettes,” Di Giovanni said. “Anyone who sells a product that causes disease and is addictive would like to do better,” stressing PMI’s dual responsibility to society and to the company itself.

    He further emphasized that improving the health of adult smokers is not only a moral obligation but also a sound business strategy. “It’s a win-win for our company and for public health,” he explained, adding that addressing societal concerns can help PMI stay ahead of the competition while positively impacting global health.

    “For us, the first goal of sustainability is to address the public health issues posed by cigarettes. The ultimate goal is to offer a portfolio of products that meets the diverse needs of the market while supporting sustainability goals.”

    Philip Morris International marked the 10th anniversary of the introduction of its IQOS tobacco heating product.

    Tobacco harm reduction advocates credit the availability of heated tobacco products such as IQOS with lowering rates of traditional smoking. In Japan—the first market where IQOS was launched in 2014—cigarette smoking prevalence dropped from 19.6 percent of all adults in 2024 to 10.6 percent in 2022. According to PMI, the country continues to have the highest number of heated-tobacco-product users, and tobacco prevalence has not increased since they were introduced.

    A decade after it was launched in Japan, IQOS now generates over $10 billion of PMI’s annual net revenues, the product is available in over 70 markets worldwide, and 30.8 million adults use it.

    “With the debut of IQOS, we launched PMI’s vision of a smoke-free company, creating an opportunity to solve the problem of smoking,” said PMI CEO Jacek Olczak in a statement.

    “Every day, IQOS demonstrates its potential for this, as evidenced by the approximately 22 million adults around the world who have fully switched to it and stopped smoking.
